I would not automatically just stop communicating and sending her flowers. If you really want to do that, then do it. But I guess what people are saying is, do it all for the right reasons. Don't do something hoping that someone's going to appreciate the gesture any more than they've already shown. Do it because you feel it's the right thing to do. But also evaluate whether this is someone you should be in a relationship, and make sure you communicate clearly about what you feel are the differences between you. Maybe they can be worked out, and maybe they can't.

I've been on my own since I was 18 too, but from what I've observed, If you are a renter in a high rent area, it's real attractive when you have your little old mom who lives month to month and barely makes ends meet, but has a house that she's had for 30, 40, 50 years with several empty rooms and/or an empty granny unit, and boy could she use an extra $500 to 1000 a month (which is cheaper than outside rents). Next thing you know you're "helping" your mom out and she's "helping" you out too.

Economic status and upbringing are also factors in the dating game. He based this theory on where we go to school. Our school is a public school in Illinois that has a very large greek system (fraternity and sorority) presence. Almost all of the people in the greek system come from the suburbs of Chicago where they tend to be upper-middle class,upper class, and white. They are stuck in their own little greek system world and if you're not part of the suburban kids crowd, they won't even pay attention to you. The have no interest in dating you if you're outside the greek system because you don't have the status of a Pike or ATO. It's mostly the girls that don't pay attention to non-greek system guys. Guys could care less; obviously we're looks driven . The girls which are non-greek which are actually from the city of Chicago are actually more open minded in terms of dating and association. They're not as sheltered and close minded as the kids from the suburbs.

This is obviously an outsider's perspective, but if I had lived long-term in Japan, I wouldn't have been that thrilled about a marriage either. Some marriages are still arranged (my teacher's was, and she was only mid-thirties.) A lot of them, the guy goes out late on the town to wine and dine clients at hostess clubs and soap bars... Monogamy on the part of the male still isn't a wide-spread assumption like it is in the US. On a purely pro/con basis, women really lose out in Japan if they choose family over career.

Over the past 18 months the only issues I’ve had is with her craving for alcohol and rate of consumption. On 3 occasions she has lost total control, and most recently began flirting with a group of guys at the club while out with myself and our mutual friends. This flirting happened on and off for about 45 minutes before I’d seen enough and we left. I dropped her off home and left. The next day I told her how upset I was at her disrespecting me like that and asked why she was flirting with random guys. She claimed not to remember this group of guys and apologized for her drunkenness, but not for her behaviour. I know I need to stop her drinking to the point of drunkenness but I can’t seem to get the message across.
