As you may guess, I wasn't particularly pleased with this and said that it isn't that common to have guy friends that you drive 6-7 hours to spend a week with, even once a year. She disagreed and I dropped it. Over the next couple days she kept talking to me, but I wasn't quick to respond as I was irritated. A few days later I called her and told her it wasn't going to work out because of our schedules and the distance we lived from each other. I argued with her that that is exactly what we had been doing for months, but she was insistent.

Also, I wanted to mention that I have been with someone in the past for five and a half years in which arguing didn't start until year three or so. Not saying you and your boyfriend will start arguing. Just be wary that dynamics and circumstances change sometimes and that you always have to take care of the relationship as it currently is. Don't assume compatibility and smooth sailing is fixed and unwavering because of what you've established so far. I'm being wary of that myself.

I would not hesitate to ask my friend if I could take my gf instead, but it will really depend on my friend. Is this her first time going to the ball, and was I taking her more because she really wanted to experience the ball or because I just needed a date? If the latter, then I'd have no problem asking my friend to yield to my girlfriend. If the former, I might keep my promise to my friend...these military balls can certainly be a fun and unique experience...
